I had three Mallard Ducks in our backyard. We have a large pond for the ducks to enjoy. There is a ditch with a road next to it which is on the side of the pond. Within the past month we have lost two of our ducks to the road. They tend to leave a very spacious pond to play in the ditch and then cross the road to play in the ditch across the street! What can I do to keep them away from the ditch and road? I have searched online for repellants I could apply to the ground to keep them away from that particular side of the pond. I am willing to take any advice. FYI - today my husband and I brought our remaining duck to a nearby pond far away from the road. This pond also had one duck. We figured they could keep each other company. Not so. Our duck was back in our yard within two hours!!! I suppose he does not want to leave as much as I don't want him to. Thanks for your help!!!!

Ducks Too Close to Road

Hi,
I use to feed many wild mallards but stopped due to the traffic and dangers that are about.
The only thing i can suggest is possiibly putting up a fence to stop them from walking across the road, but then they may fly over.
If you could cover the ditches up, or fence them off then the ducks might stop going there after a day or two. It's hard to say any suggestions without knowing exactly what your garden and the ditches look like.
Could you put a home-made sign up near the road, warning drivers of the ducks?
I've never heard of anything that repells ducks to that extent.
