Duck beak problem and Vet Location

iyiy Feb 12, 2005 01:35 AM

My duck has a layer of... I guess, skin that peeled off a bit form her beak and its kind of blood red underneath. Is this a problem? And does anyone live in Christchurch, New Zealand and knows a vet that can check up on ducks? I really want to fidn one. Oh, and a duck breeder. I feel liek getting more ducklings

Hey,

I think your doing the right thing by trying to get your duck to a Vet asap. I live in the UK so i don't have a clue what Vets are in your area. The only thing i could suggest is to phone around pet shops, rescue centres, bird breeders, kennels, animal organisations or stables, and just tell them your situation. Just ask if they know of any Vets that may deal with exotic animals and birds. They may be able to help.

Is your duck still able to eat ok? Make sure you check it's weight regularly to accuratley know if its eating enough.
If not you may have to force-feed it. Otherwise try giving it soft foods, such as soaked bread, lettuce and soft grains.

Hope this helps abit, Mel X

Nothing's wrong except for the bit of skin peeling off. She's still eating.

Hi,
My Pekins will sometimes scratch or scuff their beaks on who knows what in the yard or in their pen. It is always a bit red where the scrape is but doesn't appear to ever bleed freely. In the past, I have wet a sponge with water and applied just a dab of antibacterial soap and then blotted the scrape. Just make sure you rinse any soap off.

I've been through all kinds of boo boos when I first got my ducks as they are quite curious and people used to fish on our pond before we moved in. I've removed two fish hooks, one from the mouth and another from a leg and both ducks are fine. As a rule, I try to do what's practical and any cuts should be cleaned out similar to an animal or human.

I'm sorry I can't help you out finding a vet. I live in the US, but I know your frustration as it took me a long time to find one too and although I managed to locate one, he primarily deals with injuries and not necessarily illness.

Good luck with your duck.

Pam
