ducks and chickens living together

Sandy0066 Feb 16, 2005 01:03 PM

hi, i'm new here. i posted this question on another duck forum a few days ago with no replies. i hope someone here can help me out.

i will be having (3) bantum chickens and (3) ducks living in separate houses, but sharing a fenced in yard. the chicken feed will be up where the ducks cannot get to it, but the chickens will be able to get at the duck feed (that is if the ducks let them anywhere near it). my question is will duck feed be okay for chickens or should i feed the ducks duck food twice a day so the chickens can't get it. i've done lots of research, and some say ducks should be fed free choice, and some say twice/day is okay. thanks for any input anyone has. more questions later. sandy

Hey,

It's really good to hear that you've done research, it'll pay off in the future.
Im sure that keeping ducks and chickens together would be fine. I don't actually have chickens and don't know much about their feeding requirements. But i do know people who have ducks and chickens together and don't have any problems with feeding. I'd suggest placing several feeding bowls in their enclosure with the different feed types in a few of the bowls. That way the birds have the opportunity to eat what and when they like.
My birds have a food bowl thats always full of feed so they can eat when they want. Birds have a very fast metabolism and need feeding regularly.
Also i'd suggest putting atleast 2 water bowls in different locations in the enclosure so all birds can get to them and drink.

Im sorry i can't be anymore help,
Mel X
