Ducking wont hush?

deviledapple Mar 26, 2005 02:32 PM

I JUST brought this guy home, so i assume it may just be the transition making him so noisy, but on the chance imnot providing him with something i figured i would post today. i have two ducklings and four chicks in a large cage, about 3x3, a lamp for warming in one corner, two little dishes of food and two little dishes of water. the chicks and the smaller duck are fine, but the peking (sp) wont hush. i have nespaper on the bottom, with lots of soft fluffy things for htem to lay on, plus some pillow-type tubes for them to huddle against, which all but the peking are doing.

Hey,

Well it sounds as though their cage/pen is fine, you've certainly included the necessary things. Is the duckling actually eating and drinking? Make sure that the other ducklings/chicks are not being possessive over the food and water.
Where did you get the duckling from? Did it live with it's mother before you put it with the other ducklings/chicks? If so, it probably miss the company and care from it's mother. In which case it may take a few days or even weeks for it to bond with it's new friends.
Maybe a trip to the Vets would be a good idea, just to make sure that there is no health problem.

Hope the duckling settles soon,
Mel X

Hi,
It could be that your duckling is still adapting to new surroundings or you could just have a very talkative duckling. I've raised 5 from ducklings and it seems that the females have always been more vocal. My girls started peeping in the egg and haven't shut up since. If you are inclined to "spoil" the duckling, you could try picking him/her up and cuddling for a few minutes to try and calm it down. Mine are completely spoiled and one demands my attention even as an adult. She can often be found sitting in my lap while I fish off our dock.

Good luck!

Pam
