Why do my ducks eat their own eggs?

Duck_lover Apr 20, 2005 07:02 AM

I have one pekin duck and another one that is like a wild duck.It is different shades of brown. I think one is male and the other female. They started laying eggs on about Sunday. Monday their was two eggs in the morning then later in the day their was only one. But yesterday they had layed another egg. At around 10:00pm my dad went out and checked on them and saw them eating one of their eggs. Why is that?

Hey,

My ducks do the same, if their not broody and don't have any intentions of incubating the eggs then i think its just their way of getting the nutrients back. Thats just a guess really though.

chickens do this more often than ducks, often means they're lacking something in their diet, they'll often continue to do this even if you change their diet, it becomes like a habbit.
