Got ducks!

laciegsd Apr 20, 2005 09:13 AM

Well I got my ducklings yesterday. I wanted 3 but state law in Ohio is that I had to purchase 6. So I have 6 two day old babies and man are they fun. My kids and I getting a real kick out of them.

So far all look healthy and are eating/drinking good. If anything I notice that they drink a lot. But I figure thats normal, as they are all doing it.

We are in the drawling stagies of how we are going to do the landscaping in the open pen area for them. I was thinking of getting a long rubber basin basically and having it put into the ground for a swim area for when they are older. Perhaps like three or so of them with plants around them. But i"m curious what plants are ok to plant around them?? Are hostas ok? Or should I just contact a local nursery and ask them what is ok??

I wasn't planning on 6 ducks so my idea of pen size has been expanded. And I'm trying to decide how deep do they need their swimming water to be.

Correctly it is open for debate on just biulding a pond. The only thing that is scaring me is that fact that I have six human kids and the 3 and 1 year old don't know how to swim and are great escape artists (boys, go figure, lol). We just had a child drown last year so I'm just really hessitant to build a pond. But i think if funds are available and we can put fensing up around it....

What do you guys have your ducks in?? I guess thats a question I should be asking.

Erin

hi, i'm new to ducks too - we have (3) 9-week old rouens. i LOVE them - they are sooo sweet. mine have a house which is inside a shed (they have one half) with a "screen porch" attached to it - they are locked in at night to keep them safe from preditors. i bought them a small swimming pool to swim (they absolutely LOVE to swim) but it was getting dirty so fast that i had to buy them a bigger one - along with that, i bought a sump pump to empty it out into the gardens. the water gets dirty SO fast, not from their feet or bodies, but because they dig around in the dirt with their bills. i change the water every two days which is not really enough, but i don't want to be replacing the pump on the well already. i'm sure your family will enjoy them - they are awsome! good luck. like i said, i'm new to this, but will share what i know. this pic is what we are calling the "food storage shed" (for hay and duck and chicken feed) and a ducky porch attached.
