Duckling having seizure and passed away

amanda82 Apr 25, 2005 04:39 PM

I have 2 Kahai ducklings almost 5 weeks ago from Tactor Supply around my way. Everything with them was great until Friday. The one looked like it was having a seizure. On Saturday night they both had one a seizure at least once that day. On Sunday the darker one had at least 4 seizure that I was aware of. I ended up taking them to the Animal Hospital and the Vet said that it seems like he wasn't getting enough food. So she gave him a shot of sugar water underneath it's skin and that was suppose to help and this morning I went and check on them and they were both fine but as soon as I walked away the dark on had a major seizure and it prolly lasted almost 2 minutes. So I ended up leaving work early and coming home ot call around to some vets and I had appot. at 3:30 this afternoon. And around 1:15-1:30 he had a serious seizure and never came out of it. Now my questions is with the other duckling I have is he going to be alright since his friend died or should I get another duck so he won't be lonely and not eat or drink? If you could get back to me ASAP I would really appericate it..
Thanks,
Amanda

ducks are social animals, get the little one ATLEAST one other buddy.

Hi,

I would suggest getting another duckling, roughly of the same age if possible.
What are you feeding your duckling please? Most starter foods are designed to give the young birds all the nutritional requirements that they need.

I am feeding him Dumor Starter/Growth 20%. Ducklings are suppose to be on that for up to 10 weeks old. I was giving them a corn mix that my boyfriend's parents feed their chickens but I changed it back to that Dumor. I am not sure if I would be able to get another duckling around the same age as the one I have now.. Would a younger duckling bother him and would he attach to the other one?
Thanks

Hi,

Im sure if you got another duckling at any age it would be fine as long as they are introduced gradually. Just keep an eye on them to begin with until they are ok with each other.

Well I tired something. I got a mirror and put it where he lays and he loves it...As soon as I put it in he went right for the mirror and just laid beside it. I guess he feels there is another duck in there with him!

Thats a good idea.

Another thing that may help until you can get another duckling is to put a ticking clock near him as it will replace his mothers/firends heartbeat. I learnt that at college, its mostly used for orphaned young.
