How many times do my ducks need to eat?

leni Apr 30, 2005 06:00 PM

I have two 5 week old ducklings and I have been told mixed things about feeding them. I was told that at 2 months they should have all there featers and then they could be moved outside and fed only 3 times a day. But then someone else told me I need to at all times have food for them even after they move outside. We bought them as pets and were hoping they could come in for occasional visits when they move outside, but I really don't want those visits to be me following them around with a pooper scooper. Any information would help me a lot.

hi, roger is a muscovy rouen mix.the lines near his eyes look like a rouen markings. if you email me a picture of your ducks i could tell you what they are. he isnt even 24 hours old yet so we dont know what he will look like once he get his feathers.
as for your question about feeding. i leave food for my ducks at all times when they are outside or in the coop. if you plan on bringing your ducks in be prepared for a mess. i had brought mone into the house several times over the cold winter and it was a crazy poop festival. good luck with your ducks.

hi. we actually turned an old dog house into our duck house. it was enormous. i could take some pictures for you if you like tommorow. im not sure where you are located as to housing them in the winter. im in new england and we had a ton of snow and below 0 degree days this year so we did bring them in a few times. we eventually made heaters to go inside there house. the heaters worked out great and they were really simple to make. i could take a picture of those as well. we have an outdoor pen that is quite large with a 6 foot high chain link fence around it which they spend the day in and then go into the house at night. we have alot of large cats in our neighborhood that i am always concerned about so i put chicken wire all along the bottom and top of their enclosure so the cats cant get in. my ducks are quite large so im not sure if a cat would even attempt to get at them but i figured better safe than sorry. my email is cherrycircus@aol.com and my instant messager is the same. feel free to contact me at any time. let me know where you are located and i may be able to help you further.

Due to the forums rules I cannot direct you to the site. But We use a Duck Diaper/Duck Harness for our Duck and Geese. This holds a cut baby diaper in place, and under them to catch the poop. Change diaper about every 4 hours. Becuase of this we allow ours in the house anytime they want. They also sleep with the kids or me sometimes. Easy care and lots a CLEAN love.
We Always have there store bought fowl food available and feed them extras like lettuce, tomatoes, crickets about three times a day. Our babies our healthy and happy, and of course in house for winter is no problem.
