Line through air sac in developed Mallard egg.

BronwynC May 09, 2005 11:06 PM

I have a Mallard duck egg that is very well developed...so much that the embryo fills the entire membrane and I can only see an air sac.

However, it was overheated by six hours. I don't know how to tell if it's dead as there's no room to see movement anyway.

The following night a line in an arch formed (like a half moon) above the embryo into the air space. This has since increased and decreased in size. What is this? I can see under it so it's not solid...

NOTE: The dark spot on the line is actually a piece of dirt that's on the shell, not a beak.
