BABY DUCK, HELP !

skeletal_lovers May 27, 2005 10:35 AM

I need to know what a baby duck is supposed to feed . . someone told me it could be duckling feed, or duck feed, crushed, if I can't find the first. . but I am also wondering how many times a day it should be fed. It's rather young. It has little hairs, and it can walk, and hop every once in a while . . but that is it. .

I am also wondering how much duckling. . or duck feed costs. . and is there anything else I should know? I know it should be kept warm, always have water with it,etc .

You can usually get duck feed/duckling feed at any feed store, or also check local exotic pet stores if you live closer to or in town. (Pelleted)Duck feed looks similair to rabbit food, but instead of green the pellets are a light tanish brown. Duckling food looks very similair, only smashed into fine crumbly pieces.

If You can't find either of these, chick starter (which any feed store will have) or game bird starter will work fine. Make sure you get unmedicated food reguardless.

Where I got my duckling food, it costs 0.79 per pound. However, this is very expensive for duck food, as I bought it from an exotic pet store.

I now feed my duck duck/chicken scratch, which costs 5.00 for 10 pounds. However, you can't feed ducklings this scratch, as the cracked corn in it is too much for their digestive tracts. This is just a suggestion for when your duck grows up.

You only need to change their food once a day. However, if they spill it, you'll need to refill it, so make sure you get a sturdy bowl.

duck feed and chicken feed are fine. if your duck wont eat it it may help to add a little water to it to make it soft for them until they get used to eating it. when you wet it though you have to change it more often as it will sour. if you are unable to get feed right now you can try giving them mashed soft boiled egg or warm soft cooked noodles. my babies also liked cooked mashed carrots. make sure you cool it off first. i buy feed in 50 lb bags and they cost 10 dollars. if you buy in bulk it is cheaper. if you get feed that is in pellets you should grind it up in a blender. you can also try very small shredded lettuce or spinach. good luck and enjoy the new duck.
