Rouen Drake Behavior-funny or warning?

c_robertson Aug 19, 2005 08:48 AM

We have 4 Rouen Ducks, and one of them is Male. All of the ducks are friendly, and seem to run and play like normal, they are not afraid of people, and even come up to our 7 year old son and our dog. The weird thing is when they are swimming in the pond, and any of us (husband, self, child, dog, etc...) are standing along the edge to watch them, he will do this thing with his body...his tail sticks straight up, his wings stick straight up and his neck gets really long, but only very breifly. Like he scrunches himself up and then relaxes. He will do this several times, and at first I thought it was funny and that he was showing off or something, like he was messing around, but now I am not sure what exactly he is doing. Is this agressive behavior or show-off behavior? None of the others do this, ever! Thanks for your help!

Hey,

It sounds as though your drake is displaying for the breeding season. Ducks pair up this time of year ready for the following Spring. The behaviour you described is typical of waterfowl, and they normally do this in water as you've seen.
But just keep an eye on other signs of possible health problems to make sure that hes ok. Check how much food and water he eats/drinks, as well as his general apperance.
But if nothing else worries you then i'm sure hes fine.
