Has anyone ever seen this?

h0mersimps0n Oct 12, 2003 05:58 PM

One of the little guys from my first clutch of *normals* I gave to my dad and the rest I sold off. But the one I gave to my dad, a perfectly normal looking normal is forming a STRIPE down his normal saddles!!! Has anyone ever seen the background colors "STRIPE" before? What does it all mean.

I'm having my dad send me more pics and will post ASAP!

Some have dark dorsel stripes and some have light faded stripes in the same location.

I really like that one. Is it a motley?

carol Oct 12, 2003 11:17 PM

Yes, she is a Miami Motley.

h0mersimps0n Oct 12, 2003 09:19 PM

mine is not a motley like yours, it was just a run-of-the-mill normal from two other normals. Just like yours though, the strip is a very very dark red along the back. The strip on my dads is even more pronounced than that...

most important question: WHAT IS IT!?!?!?!?!?!

h0mersimps0n Oct 12, 2003 09:21 PM

what makes up the "stripe" is the two darker bands ("very very dark red" just lateral to the spine on each side; exactly like in that pic.

They are just a primative marking of melanin that some corns get. It has nothing to do with whether or not they are motley. Most breeders try to breed it out of corns believing it is unattractive. Although there are a few morphs I would not want this showing up in, I really like the look it gives certain corns. It mostly shows up in wild caught specimens.

He is in shed right now, and when he sheds I will take a few pics and post them for you.

The stripes arent super prominent, but they are there. Especially the 3rd or 4th day he is in shed.

What is this phenomena?

carol Oct 13, 2003 11:57 PM

LOL, it is just how a lot of wild corns look and a lot of breeders have just bred it out of corns. Asking what it is, is like asking what a certain head pattern is. All it is a a wash of melanin. In theory, the colder the climate is in a corns natural range the more melanin they will have. The darker colors soak up more heat. The warmer the climate, the less the corns need this melanin. That is the best theory I have heard of. It is kind of as if you had only seen Okeetees all your life and then saw a Miami. It is no phenomena, just a different look.

This corn was the only one in the clutch that had a stripe down it's back. I liked the look of it so I kept it....
