Hi All: I am thrilled to have found this board! It doesn't look very active but I hope someone has experience with this. My wonderful Banty mix hen (4.5 years old, 3.6 lbs...I don't know much about chicken breeds but that's my guess of breed) has a large tumor on the left side of her neck and a smaller one on the right. We went to the exotic vet here in Chicago on Saturday after finding them Friday night and we have a biopsy scheduled for Wednesday. The tumors are hard and the larger one is very lumpy but neither seem to bother her. She lives indoors now since we moved up from Florida a month ago (was indoor/outdoor) and we hold her all the time so I can't imagine they have been there for very long without us noticing. We feel awful!

I am worried about the anesthesia. Anyone had experience with chicken surgery?

My final question is this: I am getting all kinds of reports on how long chickens live and since most chicken books I see end with how to cook them, those are no help. The vets here said 8-10 years but admit they do not know, our Florida vet did not know either, a PETA display in DC this summer said 15-20 years, this site says 15, our office manager says 5, and a broiler website today said 7. HELP! Is my girl old? I don't want to put her thru too much if she is, in fact, elderly.

Thanks everyone and I look forward to any info! You can also copy me privately if you'd like
