Bird Flu

alison3 Jan 20, 2006 06:22 PM

Should people like me with chicken as pets be worried about this? I live in Louisiana and I am getting a little nervous.

There are several strains of avian influenza, in addition to the one that is currently in the news (H5N1). Ask your avian vet whether you need to be concerned about any of them.
Get into a routine of practicing good biosecurity. It's not perfect but it will help keep your flock disease free. (Let's face it--chickens are susceptible to more than flu, such as west nile, parasites, mites, lice, etc which will do a lot of harm to your birds.)
