Aggressive male Pekin

chathamjj Mar 12, 2006 03:05 PM

We are new duck owners and have a behavioral question. We got 2 male Pekin ducks almost 2 years ago. Through a mysterious accident at night a little over a year ago one of them was killed (by something). We have had just the one male for about 15 months now. He was originally the shyest of the two but is now very amicable and sociable. He enjoys our attention and lives in the fenced front yard. He guards the front door at night.

Recently he has started to show (what we consider to be) aggressive tendencies. He jumps on our front legs and pecks very hard pinching our skin underneath our jeans. If we shoo him away he is fearless --he comes right back. He has also started to chase people along the walkway that leads to the gate.

My husband loves this duck dearly --the duck was bought for him and he loves this duck. It is disheartening though that he is becoming aggressive --especially when we wear rubber boots or leather pants.

We don't know if he is just being territorial, is sexually frustrated, lonely, or wants attention. Any thoughts from those of you out there who are more experienced than us?

Hey,

If it's late Winter/Spring time for you then he may be aggressive due to the breeding season. If so it'll hopefully pass in a month or two. Would it be possible for you to get a female for him? Although you'd have to consider the possiblity of them breeding in the future.
If hes acting aggressively then it may pay to leave him alone and not try to get close to him, as this may agrovate and provoke him more.

Since the duck has no mate then he has decided to mate with you. they normally grab the back of the females neck and hold them down to mate. He is trying to get a grip on you so that he can hold you down. You can get him a mate or you can let him try and mate with you all spring and summer.
