My Muscovie duck is laying eggs.

Genny Apr 08, 2006 07:41 PM

Hey, I'm new here. I have muscovie ducks. A while back one of my girls laid some eggs and something got every one of them but only one. It ended up hatching. It was so adorable! Well, now my other girl is laying eggs. She has layed 3 so far. I really want these to hatch, I don't want anything to get these. So, I thought that maybe I could take her eggs as she lays them and keep them all with me until she is finished, and then give them back for her to sit on and hatch. Could that ahrm her in any way? The reason I thought it might not be too safe is because I've heard if a cockatiel lays eggs you should leave them in the cage with the mother whether they are fertile or not, because if you take them the cockatiel will continue to lay eggs to replace the ones you took and it will rob her from calcium and then she could possible die. So, does anybody know if it could hurt my duck like that if I took her eggs? I don't want to harm my ducks in any way. They are like my babies. Any help will be appreciated. Thankyou Genny

Hey,

Some people swap the ducks eggs with false eggs and then when shes finished laying her clutch the real eggs are replaced in the nest.
As far as i know Muscovy ducks will only lay a set number of eggs in a clutch, so i doubt she'd try to replace the ones you take.. but if you give her fake eggs then this shouldn't be a problem.
If you do take the eggs, carefully wipe them clean (don't use any cleaning products as these may harm the embryos), and store them carefully until you return them to the mother.
