digging up babies?

lute17 Oct 12, 2003 06:06 PM

Hi all-
Last year one of my boxies laid a little on the late side. They never emerged but I wasn't worried cuz I knew that often they will overwinter in the nest if they are late. This spring I waited for the babies but they never came. I dug up the nest and found the babies dead and out of their shells. We had a very cold winter here and I figure that it is natural for some clutches to not make it under those conditions. This year I have the same scenario from the same female. I would like to try to dig up the nest now to avoid a repeat. The question is how? The soil has become somewhat compacted from 3 months of weather and I sure don't want to injure any younguns with the use of a shovel.
thanks in advance!

Why dont you try instead of digging them up now just breaking up the top layer of soil and then mulching with something lite like straw or hay then just keep a good eye on the temp with an aquarium thermometer under the hay?
