male duck biting the ducklings

BIGUNBILL Jun 27, 2006 09:51 AM

Hi, this is my first post, so be gentle with me.

We are new to duck keeping and last year got 3 call ducks, 1 male and 2 female. We have 7 babies just over 3 weeks old. The male has not taken to them and likes to bite the ducklings. They ae big enough to run away now but he makes them squeal! He will do in the pond, over food and you can see him watching them ready to attack.

Yesterday we found a baby dead on the pond (its one of those blue clam shell kiddie pools). We don't know if he did it or if it just drowned.

Does anyone have any ideas on what we can do. At the moment we are thinking of giving him away and keeping 2 of the babies, 1 male and 1 female.

Thanks in advance

Hi,
I have heard of that several times with males attacking babies. I would separate the male from the females and babies until they are bigger. Good Luck! GrammaDuck
