When to release?

jimharold Jul 19, 2006 02:19 PM

Hello all,
3 weeks ago we found a small bird that had fallen out of it's nest. We live in Belgium so the pet store was not much help. At first we thought it was a pigeon but now think it's a dove. We have both in the area. I went on line to a pigeon forum and found some photos of a bird from 1 day old up to 30 days. From that I think mine was at 3 weeks of age. So now it has lost all of the tiny yellow wispy feathers and the ones under it's wings are just about all in. Funny thing is it looks like it's long tail feathers are all falling out. Only 2 left. Other than that it eats like a horse and looks good.
So now the big question. At what age should I let it go? We don't want to keep a bird. Were dog people. Also is there some way to prep the bird to get it ready for freeedom? All help and advise is welcome.
Thank you, Jimharold.

Your little friend will have to be eating & drinking on his/her own for afew weeks before release, You can learn the little one how to search for food by placing small amounts of seed here and there, this will teach forage.
Also, a soft release is best, find an area where there are more doves and release there, what the little one doesn't know others will teach him/her.
Good Luck
