Is there something wrong with my duck?

chachacha Aug 01, 2006 08:58 PM

My duck seems to have something wrong at the top of his beak, just above his nostrils, where the beak meets the feather. It's quite red and there seems to be some sort of blistering, he is constantly scratching at it, and i don't know what it is. He is only young as he is only just getting in his feathers. Help please! Thanks.

-ChaCha.

Could your duck be a muscovy? They have a red warty-like thing on their nose.

I really have no idea what kind of a duck he is. Can anybody help me out? (in this close up picture he has a little bit of blood on his beak from trying to get out of his wire pen - what
I'm inquiring about is the red bumps above that)

Well, the first picture of him looks like a baby pekin duck to me. But, the second picture looks like he could be a muscovy (since he has the red on his nose) and it looks like he has a little scratch on his beak. Is he a little older in the second picture than he is in the first one?

Yes, the picture of his nose was taken right when I sent the message. The other was taken about two weeks earlier. He's getting his feathers now and they are completely white. He has a couple of black spots on his head though too.

I saw what you meant about the red blister-like place near his nose; he must have scratched it somehow. I think that will heal up soon and go away. But, I think the red neareast to his face is because he is a muscovy duck.

Here is a picture of my muscovy boy Snowflake. He isn't a baby, but that is how a grown muscovy's nose will look when they are grown. I know it looks blistered--but that is normal for that kind of duck.

This is Snowflake and the other duck is Shadow. He is also a muscovy.

Let me know if the pic. works.

One of the pictures worked - are the muscovys usually black like that? or can they be white too? As you can see, I don't know anything about ducks. I just had to save this little guy from the jaws of a snake! So we brought him home and fell completely in love with him - It's like having a new memeber of the family!

Hey, that's one neat thing about muscovies--they can be any color almost. The can also be white, I've never had a white one, but some people down the road have a solid white male and he is really pretty. The ones I have are chocolate, black, blackish/green, and gray. We just had 11 babies hatch in May and their parents are both black and everyone of the little babies are black! They are so cute.

I'll try to send another picture--it may not work, but maybe it will. If you get to see it-it will be of my gray muscovy--he is in the background--sitting behind -Shadow-the black duck.

Let me know if you have anymore questions--I'll be glad to help!

At what age to the muscovies start to get that stuff around their face? Spikes little ring around his beak hasn't grown up any towards his eyes, it just keeps getting redder. We think he is about 3 months old. Should he already have the warts if he is a muscovy?

Genny Aug 19, 2006 08:48 PM

They can get it a little before 3 months, too. My babies were born on May 20th and they are 3 months old now and the males and the females have all started growing the 'red' stuff on their noses.
