Food for Pekin Duck

alexandra1525 Aug 08, 2006 02:53 PM

My pekin duck daisy has always eaten her duck pellets but lately she just seems very uninterested in them and she doesn't eat as much as she used to. I give her lettuce a lot and she loves it but I know it has no nutrition in it. What are some other healthy snacks I can give her to fill her up.

I usually feed my ducks grain and they can get tired of that and won't eat it for a while.
Lettuce is something I give mine and they love it! My ducks also love cheeze-its and white crackers and dorritos. But, that isn't very healthy. One of my ducks loves my rabbit's food. I don't know if that's good for her or not, though??
One of my girls LOVE popcorn seeds, so everytime we fix popcorn I make sure and give her the seeds!
What kind of food do you give her? I feed mine 'baby chicken starter feed.' Some people say it's not good for a grown duck, but on the back of the bag it says it is ok for them to eat after they are grown.

I bet Daisy just got tired of the food you've been giving her to eat and she wants a change. My ducks do that a lot, but they always get back to wanting whatever they got tired of after a few weeks.

Im not really sure what Kind of food it is actually. We just go to the feed store and we ask for duck food. I feed her chicken starter when she was a duckling but after she got older I switched to the pellets becaucse thats just what the people told us to do. My duck really really loves lettuce and I give it to her whenever I can. I think she gets a lot of food from bugs and plants she eats in our yard though. SHes out there all day and always is rooting around so i hope she gets other things to eat.

Yeah, my ducks eat on our plants outside and have killed a few of them! LOL! Is she your only duck?

Yeah shes my one and only. I raised her from just a baby, although I didn't hatch her myself. I wish I had, would she be more attatched to me if I had raised her from the moment she hatched. Does just about 3 days make a difference in imprinting?

I don't think a couple of days makes any difference. We got our sweetest ( she is a muscovy)duck when she was only 2-3 days old and she is a lot calmer than her babies that we have hatched and raised from the day they were born.

I also have a pekin, but she acts scared of me and won't let anyone touch her...

Hi,
I have 4 Pekins and they sometimes go through periods of not eating their pellets as much too. I think several things affect their appetite such as extremely hot weather, mating, molting, etc. I've sufficiently spoiled mine and they get a variety of veggies and fruit. I try to get them either leaf lettuce or romaine as both have better nutritional value than iceberg lettuce. They also love chopped cucumbers, watermelon, apples, and spinach. On a couple of occasions I have boiled eggs, let them cool and then chopped them up (shell and all) and given them to the ducks. They do eat them and the calcium from the shell as well as the hardness of the shell is good for them. Ducks do not have a gizzard like chickens, so they pick up and eat pebbles & stuff during the day to help them crush up what they eat. Try to avoid breads & the like. They will most likely eat it (although mine won't because they've not been given any) because it is not good for them. It makes them overweight and the nutrition is just not good. If you have access to Dumor brands of feed, they are pretty good. What I give is Dumor Poultry Feed Grower/Finisher. It is in pellet form and the ducks seem to like that best.
