Gestation period for Pekin Ducks

Triscuit Feb 05, 2007 07:09 PM

Until recently, I had a pair of 5-month-old Pekins. The male disappeared about two weeks ago (we think a fox got him). Now the female has started laying eggs for the first time -- she's got two at the moment. She actually seems to be brooding, which I've heard is rare for Pekins. She's spending at least twice as much time on her nest. She's not there all of the time, but it's about fifty-fifty (normally she just goes in there to sleep at night). She has been acting strange since Keithan disappeared, and we thought she just missed him -- could it have been because she was going to lay eggs? And I know that duck eggs hatch after 28 days, but how long is it between the actual mating and the laying of the clutch? Is it possible that Kaio's eggs are fertile, if the male has been gone for two weeks?

Thanks,
Tris

It is possible but not likely that the eggs are fertile.
