Third set of Mallard eggs in one season

talesap Aug 06, 2007 06:41 PM

I need to know if anyone has heard of a Mallard duck having more then one set of ducklings in one season? My girl already had one set of ducklings in the spring with the male that we have. We found another male Mallard out by their pen and we just put it in there with them. Her ducklings had already hatched when we did this. There was no problem. We let her keep them for awhile, then we sold them. Then she laid a second set of eggs, she laid on them for a little while then lost interest. Now she has been laying on her third set for at least three weeks now. I am confused I have never heard of this before. Can anyone offer any information to ease my mind on this. Thanks for anyones help. talesap

My mallard laid more than one clutch of eggs. I thought after her ducklings had hatched that would be it for the season. Two days after we found homes for her babies, she started laying eggs again. I took the eggs away this time and she finally stopped when she began molting a few weeks ago.
