My Chicken stopped laying???

tami4fun Oct 07, 2007 03:34 PM

Hi, wondering if anyone can help I have four chickens, and they started laying about a month ago. I have three shaver reds and One of them is something else, (Ugg) we are not sure what she is she was supposed to be shaver reds, but we got Ugg as a surprize. They all started laying around the same time, Ugg is the oddball and she was laying in a nest out in the woods. Once we built the new coop, she started laying in the coop, but about four days ago she stopped laying eggs, I know this because her eggs are white and the others are brown. She has in the past layed double yolk eggs, and has been walking around looking like she needs to lay an egg? I am worried she may be egg bound? How can I tell? Help! Thanks

From what my grandmother has told me and from what I have read, you will know if she is egg bound because she will look uncomfortable and stand or move in a strange way with her head or tail down.

If she is, there are some ways to help her:
1- Place her in a warm area or under a heat lamp to relax her
2 - Massage vegetable area around her vent while massaging her stomach in the direction the egg travels
3 - Hold her over steaming water

If she is bound, you need to get the egg out of her because she can die from shock or a heart attack.

Good luck and keep us posted!
