lone duck behavoir

orchids Dec 11, 2007 08:49 PM

Hi - I have one pekin drake that came to live with me about 6 months ago when his original owners realized that they don't make very good house pets. We enjoy him a lot, but as there are no other ducks and I believe that he is lonely. He has recently developed a few bad habits. I want to get him a companion or two, but am concerned that they will pick up his problem behavior too. He has recently begun to attack bare feet (very persistently and he pinches pretty hard), he also likes to run between our feet when trying to walk. he chases the dog mercelessly. My husband is constantly threatening to make a duck dinner of him. Does anyone know if getting him some companionship will give him something else to occupy his time, or will the others tend to follow his example. I'm trying to save him, not add more to the menu.

Do you have him indoors or outside? I have 4 and they all free range outside during the day, but are penned at night for their safety. I would suggest finding him a female companion. Do not get him a male buddy. They will most likely just fight.

The reason I asked about him being outside is because Pekins are notoriously messy and it would be difficult to have more than one indoors for that reason.

Good Luck!

Thanks for your response, Grammaduck. Sorry for the slow response, been very busy with the holidays!
Fluffy is an outdoor duck only. He has a floating platform in the middle of the pond for his comfort & safety overnight. Yes, I will try to introduce a female & see how they get along, as soon as I can locate one.
