okay, whats the differnce between a piliated woodpecker and a regular one, please. Nice shot...Shorty

A regular one? there are no regular woodpeckers lol. Much like there are no regular hawks. Just several different species.

Piliateds are the largest woodpecker standing at about 18". They are the bird that 'Woody Woodpecker' character was drawn from. There are also Redbellied woodpeckers, Redheaded woodpeckers, Downy woodpeckers, Hairy Woodpeckers, etc. Depending on what part of the country you live in will determine what species of woodpeckers you will likely encounter.

We've always had piliateds in the area, but this is the first year we had an active pair nesting close enough for us to actually be able to track the nest down. It's absolutely amazing the demolition damage those birds can inflict on a dead tree.
