not certain what kind of bird this is? Help

erinszoo Jul 01, 2003 07:43 PM

Was brought a baby bird and everyone concerned thought it was a starling but at this point I'm certain it isn't but am unsure what it is. It is solid black, no coloration gradiants, black beak slightly curved, black eyes, black legs. It is a lot smaller than a crow though and it has a fairly long tail. It can fly quite well, drinks from the pond in our yard, catches ants, eats currants from our bush, is extremely smart. I don't have him captive but he stays in our yard.

Sounds like a type of grackle maybe ? - Depending on where you are located, It could be a common, boat tail, or even great tail - or some other blackbird, like a brewers ?

http://www.jjaudubon.com/havell/plates/plate007.html - Heres a link with a picture -

Juveniles are dull matte black, and have brown eyes, not yellow like the adults -

Heres more info on them - http://birds.cornell.edu/BOW/COMGRA/

that comment about the long tail made me think "grackle" also. I live in Dallas and they plague us here. Still, I see the adults males as striking animals.
