HELP I found a Baby crow dying in the street!! question about mites, fleas, lice?

ciscobird Jun 27, 2004 10:49 AM

As the title says I found a young crow dying in the street. It was sitting with its beak straight up and eyes closed. I took it and it struggled some and then settled into the heat of my hands. I drove home and tried to give it some water and corn. Wouldn't open its beak.

To make a long story short. I saw little bugs crawling all over my hands and arms. Fleas? Lice? I took it back outside and saw a neighbor. She went in and called a local wild bird rescue. They said to bring it in. She took it away in a paper grocery bag with a sweat shirt in it.

I ran into my house and promptly tore my clothes off and threw them all in the incinerator. I took a long hot shower and then came and scrubbed my kitchen down as that is the only place I took the baby. I did not bring him further into my home. I have five parrots. 4 budgies and 1 cockatiel. My birds are still sleeping. I am reluctant to wake them as I am terrified I am going to infect them with something from this baby. I also have a dog.

WhAT CAN I DO???? What would You do???

Hey I just heard from the wildlife rescue center. They said that its a Grackle. Is that a crow?

Anyway, it does indeed have feather mites. She told me that what I did was sufficient. I mean cleaning up everything taking a shower and dumping my clothes were all good things to protect my parrots. She said that they shouldn't get them. Even if they do its a simple cure. Its some kind of powder that works really fast to kill them.

They told me to call back in two days to see how it is doing. The vet is going to look at it this afternoon.

Grackles aren't crows but they're in the corvus family. They look kind of like crows but their beak is thinner and their tail's slanted. I hope everything turns out okay for your birds and the grackle. If they do get mites, i know they sell anti-mite sprays at petsmart etc.
