Got my Pied Crow...good times, bad times (nasty temper)

sevensmom Jul 19, 2004 12:59 PM

Hello, I am new here. I had dreamed about getting a pied for about two years and then my wish came true, but he is not quite excactly what I hoped for. He is about 10 weeks old and is as big as a full grown crow. He loves me (cause I feed him) and can be very good, very sweet, BUT if you make him mad (like try to pick him up to transport him out to the aviary)or misunderstand him...watch out! Does anyone know how to nip this in the bud? Will he get better or worse as he matures?
~~so the moral is "be careful what you wish for" to all those who would also like one of these beautiful, smart birds.
(a photo of him can be seen on my site below)

Oh boy, I'm jealous! I'm dying for a pet corvid but don't have the resources yet. Maybe someday! I can't really help you with your question seeing as I have very little experience with crows, but have you joined the crows mailing list? They're the people to ask when it comes to any crow question, and especially pet crow question.

If they can't help you, probably no one can.... but I bet they can help you!

Hello,
Do you know where I can purchase a pet crow or raven?
someone that will ship within the USA.

Thank you.

Hi Theresa,

The most widely known breeder of Pied Crows and other corvids is Brian Blazer. You need to get on his waiting list if you would like to purchase from him. I got mine from a vet who was just getting started in breeding/selling but no longer does. I was lucky enough to get her only surviving hatchling.

Please read up on corvid ownership in the meantime (if you haven't already.) They are not an "easy" pet. Their intellect, bossiness, curiosity, & need for lots of social interaction are both frustrating and rewarding.
I have learned to accept my crows behavior as just being a crow and we get along much better now. Brian's site if you don't have it is:

Good luck and let us know if you get a corvid,
~Sara

Thank you Sara
I have contacted Brian and am waiting for a response.

I also contacted orchid tree exotics www.orchidtreeexotics.net ,
and the lady (Janis Clark) told me that she wont know if she will have any baby birds until sometime this late spring 2005. She raises hand-reared African Pied Crows for $850. plus shipping (which she says runs around $90.-175.)
