How to get rid of hawk in my yard

Laura101 Mar 30, 2007 05:53 PM

Hi, I know it's a fact of life that hawks will eat birds and rodents, but how do I keep it from hunting in my yard? I put out seeds, bread, and corn and get a nice collection of wild birds, bunnies, and chipmunks. So far I have found this hawk killing birds in my yard on 2 occasions. Unfortunately, I think it has figured out this is a good area because a group of birds comes in to eat and it probably figures its easy picking. I don't live in the woods, I live in a suburban subdivision, so I'm not sure what he is doing here in the first place, but I have seen him around for 2 years now. Any way I can keep him away from my yard so I don't have to see these things? I did go out several times in the winter and yelled at it and threw snowballs but apparently that was not enough to scare it away. Any suggestions anyone? Thanks so much for any help you can give me!

You don't.
When you put out food, you establish a concentrated prey base.
You can't expect hawks to ignore your little paradise, when you put out a bird feeder, expect to feed all birds, including raptors.

It is a federal offence to harm or interfere with a bird of prey.
If you don't want them, throw out your bird feeders.
Otherwise, just enjoy nature in all its facets. I've had Coopers hawks swoop down the length of my yard to snatch a bird ten feet away. It's thrilling to see a hawk do what it does best.

Try calling your local Fish & Game Dept. to complain. That ought to give them a laugh.

Where's the love?

Stupidgirl Jul 23, 2007 09:36 AM

"Where's the love?"

dont you mean wheres the dove? bein eaten by the hawk of course lol

seriously, its like asking wheres the love in a black hole thats sucking in planets or a meteorite wiping out the dinosaurs, or the dove killing a living grain of wheat by eating it. love aint got nothing to do with the workings of nature, its an arbitrary human construct. the universe isnt purpose driven and cant 'care' about anything. your question is without meaning in the context of non human events.
