Madagascar hissing Roaches and the smaller type too

abstractcypher Oct 12, 2003 06:57 PM

whats the deal with these guys? i hear the beardies love them, and my mew female tears them up. the reason i ask is beacuse the guy i got her from sold me a couple dozen. one of my other beardies seems to enjoy them also. im just not sure if the shells are too crunchy or are they ok as an "occasional" treat?

Noooo, don't use them as feeders! They're great pets :P I cared for one for a year and he was great. (For a cockroach, that is)

Yep, they are fine as treats. Feed them freshly molted babies though. At least thats what I have been told. I have 5 pet hissing roaches and once they start having babies, i plan on feedin em to all my lizards =) They are supposed to be pretty good for them, too.

i dont realy know the first thing about them...

Well, they like it warm and very humid. I keep mine in a plastic kritter keeper with a heat pad under half of it. with a hide log and a branch to climb on. I feel them dry cat food and veggies. the cat food is supposed to help stimulate breeding. and i keep them on ecoearth for a substrate. and spray the tank down a few times a day to keep up the humidity. Hope this helps!

the guy who sold them to me said to clean out the enclosure about every 4 months or so. is this true? whats your routines?

Melle Oct 13, 2003 07:07 PM

I would actually clean them out a lot more often. They (or at least mine do anyways!) poop a lot, so i would go once every few weeks to once a month. Use your own judgement on how clean or dirty it looks. Good luck!

I have bred these for a year now...I feed smaller ones to my collareds and chameleons, and med size to my Bearded....she chomps them before they ever hit the bottom! I would not feed tons of them though, and freshly molted would be best I am thinking. and as for keeping them...
They do NOT require humidity! That will lead to molds, mites, etc and all kinds of nasty things to deal with!!!
HEre is how I keep mine...I have 1 inch of birdseed in the bottom of the container...I use my own water bites (make my own), and put chicken feed crumbles in a shallow bowl (non-medicated!). EVery now and then I toss in some greens. I also give them toilet tissue tubes to hide in and they love those...and my colony is thriving...THRIVING....am almost over run with them!

Well, i keep mine real humid because every caresheet I have read on them says they need high humidity, and the breeder i got them from told me the same. Mine are doing great that way
