HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Banded Gecko has an open wound..

barbieinbondage Oct 12, 2003 07:33 PM

My Central American Banded Gecko, has a lump around his chest area, well just recently this bump opened up and now you can see it. It's yellowish color and looks really gross. I've tried neosporin on him daily, but I don't know what else to do. Someone told me it might be traces of a parasite that is finally leaving the body, but that sounds very odd. Please HELP! Thanks, Vanessa

I dont have any new pictures of the bump, but here is an old one. I cant find my digital camera's cords...

Was the gecko wild caught? It does sound like parasites, but i dont think they literally 'jump out of the skin', but i could be wrong. The best thing you can do right now is bring it to a vet asap.

Yes he is wild caught, thanks for the advice. I did not know that at the time of purchase. I would not have bought him if I had known. When I first got him he wouldn't eat at all, and now he eats 2-3 crickets a day and is getting nice and plump. I think it might be the parasite leaving the body....DOes anyone know of a good VET in south orange county?

From my experience it is most likely not parasites or anything like that at all. Parasites generally do not leave through the skin, they stay in it and their larva leave via droppings....just not how parasites work thats all. What it PROBABLY is is a cist (however you spell that). We have geckos come in with them at work. You simply pop it and it heals up with some neosporin (like you said). Nothing major, but I cant guarantee you that its what you said without seeing the actual gecko (pictures generally dont come out too well). Take it to a vet and get it checked out, but dont freak out, neosporin in small amounts should not hurt it. A vet visit is good also because you learn about diseases for future reference. Well worth the money if you plan to keep geckos since this is fairly common from what you described.
