Do you really need 1000-2000 mealies to breed?

bmills Oct 12, 2003 07:45 PM

I got 1000 mealies off a website from a breeder...split them up, put about 700 or a little more in the fridge, and then took about 200 or 300 and left them out with a water source. I am trying to breed the mealies but feared that if I did something wrong and got them all in their "alien" form and they didn't breed that I would lose all 1000, so I am just trying it out with 200 or so of them. Is this okay? I will get the mealies to actually feed my leos from the batch that is in the fridge. please let me know.

Never done it, but it should be fine, no reason for it not to be.

No..ideally you only need 2 ..butttt the more you try the more mealies you'll get back... and the more chances you'll get to be successful that some of them will breed...but yes it should be enough...

I would run out of mealies before anything got started. I most recently bought 10,000 mealies and I think I may have enough converting to beetles to keep my colony going.

You see, it all depends on how many leos you are feeding. I have 25 or so breeders and right now the associated offspring.

If you only have 2 or 3 then you may have enough going.

I had only 50 mealies, and had success breeding them. 1000-2000 sounds a bit too many for me, but that's just me. It's your choice, and you'll have a total success in breeding these.

I am not quite so organized. I got about 1500 mealies and left them all gutloading in a container at room temperature. They don't all become aliens at the same time, so I've ended up with about 100 aliens (that I just picked out as I found them), with plenty still left over for feeding my leos.

I tried breeding mealies once....big pain in the A$$! The eggs take a long time to hatch, and took even longer for the baby mealworms to grow a centimeter. All eventually died.

Be prepared for a long wait, but once they hatch, theres going to be millions from 1000 adults!

Good luck,

My first experience with breeding mealies was by accident. I had some worms (4-5) change into aliens, then beetles and i had no clue what to do with them. I put them into another container and just left them, with food/water etc. One day when i went to check then out, the entire container was full of baby worms, very very small but i could see them movign the substrate around. Unfortunetly i lost that lot from to much moisture.
They are soooooooooo easy to breed though. Two days ago I switched over my beetles to a new container cause i was finally able to see the baby worms. I did order 4000 mealies to feed as it'll take a while for my colony to become feeding size. I go through about 500/week so i need a constant supply.

May i ask, do you gutload your mealworms for 24 hours after taking them out of the fridge?

I am only feeding 3 leos...so I should be fine. Have another question...when I split them up, the ones I put in the fridge I take out every day so they can warm up and eat some more, but when I do this, should I also put some fruit in their for them to get their water source from? Please let me know

Thanks everyone for all the help.
