A colorful coleoptera to identify???

pilonm Mar 03, 2007 09:15 AM

Hello,

Here is a series of pictures of a colorful coleoptera took last august 31st at the Great Meadows National Refuge in Massachussets near Concord...

When I was close to him, he raised his legs like this in order to impress me...

Is it possible to identify it (family, genum, species)?

Thank you very much in advance!

Hello Michel,

That is Popillia japonica (Japanese beetle) which is a major pest of ornamental/landscape plants.

When they put their two thorny back legs upward, that's for defense.
