Please identify this insect

gnosis Mar 11, 2007 07:05 AM

I found this insect wedged between the slats in my welcome mat. After taking a few photos of it I've realised how lucky I was not to step on it. Can anyone tell me what it is? Thanks.

Here's a closeup of the insect from behind (where it was less likely to kill me).

Thanks, Lizardman.

Apparently these are quite common in some parts, but very rare in Australia where I am.

That's quite unusual! Maybe it was accidentally shipped there.

Cheers, mate.

I specifically came over to this forum to find out what that thing was. I've seen them before coming out of the couch (AHHHHHH!!!!!) and then saw them on TV recently as cave dwellers in the Planet earth TV series. They REALLY freak me out, which is a big deal for me since roaches and stuff don't even make me flinch.
Anyway, I'm glad someone was able to post a picture and have it ID'd. Now I'm interested to find out what they're habits are, and what they're up to.
Yeuch!!
Thanx

Tom
