Was is this?

I found about 10 of these things near my laptop and external hard drive. Should I keep squishing them or are they harmless? So far they only seem to be interested in the heat from said devices and not me.

I can't really tell because the picture is not large enough to distinguish details. If it's not a red aphid, then most likely it is a nymph of a true bug (Hemiptera).

You can help narrow down the ID by checking out insects & whatever state/county/city you live in--using a search engine.

You can also probably ID it via: bugguide.net
