Bumble bees in old birdhouse

2 questions re bumble bee nest in an old birdhouse on my deck...

- I found a bee with it's head missing on the lawn under the nest today. Would the other bees in the colony have done this, or could it have been another insect or bird?

- Are bumblebees territorial by nature? I have noticed a lot fewer yellow jackets around this year.
