I have searched the net and Wikipedia in vain trying to locate information of buffalo ants. It appears this may be only a local name for these and I need to know correct name. The only thing I know is that the buffalo ant is said to be really a wasp but is called ant because of its resemblance to a big hairy ant. These are vividly colored, usually bright red or orange, and much bigger than an ordinary ant; I have never seen one with wings so I'm not sure about the wasp part. I see them occasionally here in Northern Arizona in high altitude ponderosa forest, and more frequently in the red rock desert of southeastern Utah. I don't have a picture.
