Shipping tarantula

djs27 Aug 08, 2007 03:40 PM

A friend wants to ship me a chaco gold knee from FL to NY. What is the most appropriate shiping method for this animal?

I can tell her how to pack the box, but I don't know who to ship through. Any advice would really be helpful.

I really think it is possible to ship this animal for about $20 isntead of the $45 that UPS usually charges. Maybe I'm wrong.

Thanks.

I've always used USPS (The post office) and depending on how it is packed and how light it is, it usually runs me $15-$20. You must use Express (Overnight). If you just use priority, it may not arrive for 5 days and your tarantula could die in transit.

UPS should not be $45, it seems to me that all major shippers are around $20-$30 for overnight shipping. By all means shop around and see who'll give you the best deal.

Ensure they are packed well, in case the package sits in a hot mail truck for a while.

Thank you very much for the response! I wanted to make 100% certain it was still legal to ship via USPS. I thought it was, but needed to check.

We'll certainly have to use an ice pack in this weather. I'm not too worried about 1 day delivery.

Thanks again.

It's not legal, yet everyone still does it, including many of the large dealers. The thing is the postal employees either don't know or don't care about the rules regarding spiders. You are not required to tell them what is in the box either. They ask you is you are shipping anything dangerous or potentially hazardous, and you just answer no, and that is a truthful answer.
