urticating hairs

fmanda Nov 19, 2007 09:38 PM

Boy, did I ever get nailed by my female T. blondi and T. Apophysis today. I changed out the substrate in both enlosures. I wore latex gloves but I still managed to get the nasty little things all over my stomach, arms, hands, and chest. Anyway I think I'll go take a benadryl, just thought I'd share.

Yeah, this is the fourth time for me. Those two theraphosa sp. are killers. I've been hit with L. parahybana and X. immanis before, but these guys are on a whole nother level.

I wonder if some people are less affected by the hairs. I own a T. Blondi, and have owned him/her for 3 years, yet have never been bothered by the hairs. Fuzzy tends to stand up rather than throw hairs most of the time, which may be the reason... but I know the enclosure is full of them. I stay out of Fuzzy's space unless I have to do maintence, which is basically removal of digested prey items and I am never affected?
