Where can I get a tarantula in chicago?

sovietjet Feb 09, 2008 10:12 PM

Hello, I am new to the tarantula world. I would like to buy one but have no idea where to go. I know the chilean rose and mexican redknee are the best for beginners. I am looking for a spider as large as possible without being aggresive and also one that is colorful and will not burrow itself in. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Those two are good, but not the only best beginner Ts. Those 2 are usually recommended because they are the most readily available. The Mexican redknee (Brachypelma smithi) fits your requirements as being colorful, docile and large (6-7". Another one to consider is Grammostola aureostriata (Chaco goldenknee) it is docile as well and gets up to 8". Most other large Ts have a bit more of a temperament and I wouldn't call docile.
Where to find them? In a big city like Chicago It shouldn't be hard. Petco and just about any other mall-type pet store will carry G. rosea and maybe B. smithi. Call around to your local pet stores and see what they have and if they could order you in a specific species if they don't have the one you want. Look for stores that specialize in reptiles, they usually have a good selection of tarantulas as well.

You could try The Chicago Reptile House in Orland Park...they have lots of inverts usually.
