Rack system questions.

BryanR. Oct 12, 2003 09:04 PM

I plan on breeding leopard geckos, in the mid winter or early spring. I plan to build a rack system around christmas. I'll probabbly have 5 shelves to begin with. Its also going to be a sweater box rack system, but I've seen a lot of variation in sweater box sizes. are teh 16" x 24" x 4.5" ones okay? For lighting I'll be using rope lights. For heating, I'll be using heat tape below each the back side of each sweater box. Since Im going to start out with a pair of albinos, Ill probably only be using one shelf for a while. Then when I get hatchlings They'll go into another shelf, then as they grow, Hopefuly ill have mostly females, if i control the temps right. Then I can put 3 or 4 more once they grow older in with my male, and the rest will probably be put into groups of 4-5 for each rack. Then when I get a male or buy a male, a male will be added to each shelf, and so on. Then I get to the point where I can start selling the new hatchlings, but I'll keep extra shelfs incase they dont sell.

Also Ill have a thermometer in each sweater box, on the warm side, or maybe a probe for each, and have it all sent to one master digital display so I know whats going on. Ill probably use paper towls as substrate, and the correct hide spots and such. Anyways, tell me what you think.

well the easiest thing to do is build a crapload of of bin space, so you don't have to do it agian, and i would reconmend getting new blood, don't inbreed to much.

I use the rope light in my rack, and it works great! I have it attached to a timer switch, so it doesn’t get left on. The rope light will get fairly hot, so I wouldn’t recommend leaving it on for more than ½ hour at a time.
For the heat tape: I put mine directly on the shelf (and the Rubbermaid sits on top of it) to provide my leos with belly heat. Hope this helps, and best of luck!

Actually now that I've looked at prices and suck, I think christmas lights, just plain small clear ones, would work even better?

I’m sure Christmas lights would work too. They are a bit cheaper. I lit 7 shelves with one strand of light rope, I’m pretty sure it was under $20. Some benefits of light rope would be there are more lights per foot, and I bet it is easier to route around your rack, because the lights don’t hang off of the wire.

Sounds good to me. Not sure if you know this already, but theres a great post a while back on how to make an awesome rack.
