I've had real good luck at campions park in irving, its near the beer stores off nw highway and oconnor. I always take my bike and do a couple laps on the sidewalk near dusk. Lots of rats, garters, and turtles. I wish I knew a place off the map where there are less people around. Lately i've had alot of luck at Arbor Hills nature preserve in Plano, TX. Rowlett creek park is also a good spot but is far east dfw.
Depends on what you want to find. I grew up and lived in Arlington for 20 plus yrs. Snake hunting used to be pretty good around there. The trinity river bottoms off of 30 is good for lots of stuff; TX rat snakes, kingsnakes, milks, etc. Can be a dangerous place though, I don't go unless I'm packin heat.
I used to have pretty good luck out past Cedar Hill and near Joe Pool but my brother tells me it's pretty grown up now. Troy Hibbits still lives around there, he'd be a good one to ask. I've been living in other parts of Texas since 90' so things have changed, I'm sure. If it were me I'd take a short drive South of Ft. Worth towards at least Alvarado and start there.
Have Fun..JP
