Turtle Looking Beetle

root1976 Jun 13, 2004 11:23 PM

We found this big fat beetle in our garage under a towel. He is quite cute and the kids want to keep him. I have no idea what it is and can't find anything close to it on the internet. Haven't seen anything like it on fear factor. He would be quite a mouthfull! It is about the size of a nickel. His body is in 2 parts plus his head. He is black and has a little horn in the middle of his head. He has 2 antennas that come out from the side of his head with 3 little fingers on each of them. His legs go out from the side and curve toward the back. His feet have 2 toes? with little tiny spiky's on them (good for climbing). He reminds me of a turtle. The kids have named him climber. I don't know what he eats and I don't want to keep him if he'll end up dying. Can anyone help me identify this cute turtle beetle?

I do have a digital camera and can take a picture to email in JPEG format if someone thinks they can identify it. Also, My husband thinks it looks like the big beetle in the movie "Bugs Life". Hope that helps! Sure would appreciate any input. Even if you're not sure it's something to go off of. Thanks!!

Well I found out what it is!
I called an older wiser friend of mine and described it to him. He said it sounded like a tumblebug. Or at least that's what they called him out on the farm. He said they roll manure into balls and they used to watch them when he was a kid.
I went online and looked under manure beetle and sure enough it is a "tumblebug" or "Dung Beetle".
My cute turtle bug is a poop pusher! He is a facinating little guy. Although I don't think the kids will be keeping him as a pet!
