How to properly maintain question..

amazinglyricist Nov 17, 2004 12:45 PM

Hi, I found these beetles that resemble Tenebrio molitor, common mealworms in with my madagascar hissing cockroaches, called Alphitobius diaperinus or lesser mealworms amongst other names and was wondering how to set them up in their own tank, or if it's exactly the same way as you set up the common mealworms, I can't find anything online about them other than they're pests and how to kill them.

I would first make sure that you have a disease-free strain of this Tenebrioid sp., as a few articles that I've read indicate that they tend to carry pathogens which affect poultry & possibly may affect reptiles adversely.

As far as culturing, I would use wheat bran, oat bran, non-medicated chicken mash (protein) and then supply the usual carrots, apples, potatoes for carbs & starch or a similar variation.

I've included a link with some good info on this species.

Goodluck.
