Can anyone help with identifying this beetle?

Well, to be honest I don't know anything about insects, so I don't know if this is actually a beetle or not.

It is slightly bigger than a lady bug, and can fly. My friend said one of these "peed" on him and it left a really nasty looking scar.

I saw them in Rivas, Nicaragua this summer.

Looks like a tortoise beetle-possibly in the Cassidinae family. Not sure of the genus or species. May take a bit of research to ID--may have some luck e-mailing photo to Nicaraguan entomologist.
