I have an African Giant, and I was wondering what is the best substrate to use. If a mixture of soil is used, what is a good recipe that is easy to find.

Thanks a lot................Dave

I recommend using that forest substrate that you can buy at pet stores, or organic potting soil mixed with a little humus and sand. Avoid anything with chemicals in it, only use natural stuff.

The only other option you have is to collect soil from rotting logs and place it in a turkey bag with a little water and cook the hell out of it. I've tried that before with great success. If you decide to do it, never collect from areas near a road, agricultural fields, or lawns or areas under powerlines to avoid pesticides.

I use the coconut fibre that comes in dried bricks. You can find it in the reptile section of the pet store. I've had very good results with it but watch that it doesn't dry out.
