White Whiskers?

Runner Dec 08, 2004 12:18 AM

I have a pair of African Black Millipedes that I've kept for about 2 years. Lately, I've noticed tiny, white, hairlike bristles growing out from between the antennae segments and the segments of the first 15-20 pairs of legs. They also protrude from around the "facial" area. They seem to grow in tufts of about 10-15 hairs, which are about 1-2 mm long. It's difficult for me to get a good look, but a small portion of one side of the affected millipede's "face" seems to be deteriorating. Other than the deterioration, the millipede seems to be healthy and feeds regularly. Its cagemate seems to be unaffected. Is this some type of infection? If so is it detrimental to the animal and is it contagious? How can I treat it?

Sounds to me like a fungal infection. Might want to try lowering the humidity a wee bit but other than that I cant really suggest anything.

Sounds like a fungus or a mold of some type.
I would seperate it from the other(s) and clean the tank thoroughly. Set the affected one up by itself in a clean container. You might try using a q-tip dipped in water and try cleaning the affected area. I wouldn't use any type of chemical. Please keep us informed on its progress.
