Coconut Pith Fiber substrate for Giant African Millipede?

heavymetal Jun 19, 2005 02:15 PM

Has anyone used this for pedes? The brand I have is "Down To Earth". It is the fibers from coconuts. It holds moisture, resists bacterial mold and fungal growth. I used it for my Madagascan cockroaches and African Fire Skinks and it worked well. I would like to use it for my first Giant African Millipede.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Yes it is a great sustrate. I use it in my Giant African Millipedes tank and in my Fire Millipedes as well. I also use it in my Tarantulas. Its awesome stuff, since it hold moisture so well and i have never had problems with molds or mites or anything. I work at a pet store and I recommend this substrate to everyone and its the only one I use in more than ha;f the animal cages there. Good luck to you and your Giant!

Thanks, Crypto!
I also use it in my two B. smithi's (Mexican Red Knees). I love this stuff. I bought a HUGH block (20 lbs. dry) of it on the internet for practacly nothing. In the pet shops it can get pricy.

I use the same stuff, only i have mine mixed with peat moss and potting soil. When i first set up their tank, i just used "forrest bedding", which is made from coconut fibers. I started adding the peat and potting soil when i moved them up to a heavily planted 29 gal.

Hey yeah I recently added Peat moss to my tanks as well. Its not a bad idea to add potting soil but sometime u have to be careful cus some companies add insectisides to it n dont say it....can be baqd ive had millis die on me before with no other explanation other than hte potting soil I used. Not saying all is bad but just a heads up. Not saying that it is a bad idea yavannaus just saying some brands can be bad!
