Tank Mates For Millipedes?

Grunngg Sep 04, 2005 06:49 PM

I would really really like to find my African Black millipede a tank mate, besides another African Black. Does anyone know of something I can keep with it? Somewhere I heard someone kept Hissing Cockroaches with his millipedes, but I was told at a pet shop the roaches might harm the Pede. Ideas anyone?

Also, will the pillbugs get into the millipedes food dish?

From what I do know, all millipedes are compatiable with one another. Their all plant eaters and don't have fangs like centipedes LMHO! and are very socialable with other pedes.

I wouldn't put hissing cockroaches with them for one reason: Should your pede be a female and lays eggs, the roaches WILL eat the babies! That's the one and only reason I wouldn't put roaches in the same tank with pedes.

Sounds good. I don't plan on breeding pedes yet, so I should be ok.I plan on having my African Giant with two hissing cockroaches and a texas millipede in a 20 gallon long tank. Does that sound ok? Also, how would I go about feeding the roaches? I just want to figure everything out before I make a purchase.

One more question. I really like seeing my millipede crawl all around his home. Are you positive the hissers wont bother him enough to keep him rolled up all the time?

I've been keeping millipedes and hissers together for years and they get along fine. They don't seem to really notice eachother and the hissers don't scare the millipedes. I often see them cleaning the water drops off of eachother and they share the same food dish. My tank is about 3 feet high by 2 feet wide (1 foot deep). I have a lot of sticks for the pedes and roaches to climb on. I have a couple little caves for them to hide in too. The hissers and pedes often sleep together in there.
Food really isn't a problem since they eat the same stuff. I feed them fruit, veggies and lettuce. Sometimes I'll sprinkle a little bit of roach diet on the fruit so they get extra vitamins.
